Wine fact....

Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855

 In 1855, France was to hold the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, a international exhibition to be held in Paris from May 15 1855 to November 15 1855.  Not to be outdone by England's exhibition in 1851, Emperor Napolean lll had built A Palais de L'Industrie for industrial and art.  He also requested a classification system for France's best Bordeaux wines which would be on display for visitors around the world.  Broker's from the wine industry ranked the wines based on the chateau's reputation, and trading price which was directly related to the quality of the wine.  Wines were ranked in importance from first growth to fifth growth.(Also referred to as crus).  All of the red wines that made it on the list came from Medoc region except for one, which came from the Graves region.  The white wines, less important than that of the reds were limited to sweet varieties of Sauternes and Barsac and were only ranked from first great growth to second growth.  Since the classification on two changes have occured.  The first was in 1856 when Chateuas Cantermerle was added as a fifth growth and more significantly, in 1973, when Chateau Mouton Rothschild was elevated from second growth to first.

Chateau Haut-Brion, Commune de Pessac, Graves  (The only chateau situated in Graves rather than Medoc and as such is permitted to produce and sell dry white wine under the same name and appellation as the red wine.) 

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Commune de Pauillac, Haut-Medoc (reclassified from second growth in 1973)
